What are the challenges of a parallel society living on the moon? How to effectively manage robots that assist us in our daily lives? I outlined a prototype to improve and streamline the process.

Outcome

For the Design Flows challenge organised by Bending Spoons, I created HXB, a tool that helps ultimate everyday tasks, in an attempt to win the competition.

The challenge

In a parallel universe, it's the year 2025, and humanity has been establishing settlements on the Moon for the better part of a decade. Everyday life in the lunar colonies would be impossible without Hexabots-ingenious, multi-purpose robots that are crucial to survival in this unforgiving environment.

How manage and ultimate task in easily and fast manner?

User Personas

Who need to manage their Hexabots? Both families and teams of explorers rely on these tireless companions to perform a wide variety of tasks, from mining precious resources to growing crops and exploring uncharted craters.

Exploerers and Researchers

These users focus on different mission-critical tasks, are often multitasking, and need to conduct their experiments efficiently.

Families

These users aren’t technical experts, rely on Hexabots for everyday activities, and require their interactions with the app to be as simple and straightforward as possible.

Usabilty Insights

Developers and researchers realised a current rudimentary version of the app by deriving several insights useful for design.

Data such as "User personas" and "Usability Insights" was provided by the brief.

Benchmark

During the design process, an inspirational benchmark was carried out, some evidence of which can be found in the design choices of the prototype:

  • Uber: step-by-step view and pick-up customisation of taxi ride;

  • Waymo app: makes trust and personalisation to a self-driving taxi;

  • Deliveroo: standardisation and guiding the process of finalising a takeaway order;

  • Amazon Prime: step-by-step view of the progress made and milestones monitoring.

Scenario

A research team in one of the lunar colony’s science domes is working on a prototype turbine using a silicon 3D printer. However, they lack the specific materials needed to complete the project. The user opens the app to manage the Hexabots and starts on the homepage, where they check the status of each Hexabot with all related info. Their goal is to quickly ensure that a Hexabot is tasked with gathering the necessary resources. Once this is accomplished, the user then monitors the Hexabot’s progress, receiving updates when it has collected the materials and returned to the dome after completing the task.

Data such as "Scenario", was provided by the brief.

Wireflow

The wireflow represents the researcher's Journey to explain the steps from landing on the homepage to the assignment and monitoring of the Hexabot. Both targets, families and researchers, hook into the assignment flow from the task definition page, where, through the use of task-specific forms, it is possible to quickly start a search and choose, via a list or map, the location of the assignment. In response to the need to control the progress of one's tasks through mission milestones, in relation to other hexabots.

The Prototype

The journey was an improved and streamlined process by implementing specialized modules tailored to each specific operation.
The possibility have action executed through vocal interaction is a key element: an alternative task execution path through which a series of questions guide us, and we have the opportunity to engage the dialogue flow from any point in the customer journey.

Concerning and in compliance with level AA of WCAG guidelines 2.2, the construction of the interactive elements responding to experience, sometimes in extreme conditions: with gloves or in temporarily disabled conditions, followed an accessibility by design approach.

Personalization

Customisation is a key functionality for users, who can assign a unique name and colour to their Hexabot for greater recognisability, ensuring a personalised and efficient user experience that reflects the diverse nature of the operations involved.

Conclusion

Even though I did not win, taking part in this challenge was exciting. Little time, lots of ideas, lots of design choices I might have made differently with more time, I love projects where time dictates instinctive and spontaneous choices.
